Sand Springs' Discoveryland! theater, known for the play 'Oklahoma,' to remain closed through 2013

SAND SPRINGS, Okla. - Discoveryland!, a Sand Springs attraction for nearly 40 years, will remain closed for the second year in a row.

The outdoor theater calls itself "The National Home of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Oklahoma!"

The summer of 2011 marked the first season, in 37 years, that the theater did not open.

Owner Bill Jeffers says his decision to remain closed this year is due to several factors. He says attendance has declined in recent years. For example, nearly 50,000 people visited the attraction in 2007. By 2011, only about 30,000 patrons were in attendance.

Jeffers also says his parents, who founded Discoveryland!, recently passed away. He also believes the temperatures are too hot for the actors and spectators.

In a Discoveryland! Facebook post, the venue broke the news to its fans.

"Discoveryland! friends and family, sorry for the delay in getting back to you all! We will not be opening back up for the Summer 2013 Season. Sorry for the bad news, but please don't give up on us! Thank you for all your great comments! Dland misses you too!"

Jeffers says it is still very possible that theater will reopen in the future.
