Demolition to begin on Barnard Elementary School

TULSA - Demolition crews will begin tearing down the old Barnard Elementary School Tuesday.

The building was destroyed in a massive fire Sept. 5.

The Tulsa Public School District owns the building and Bob LaBass, a district representative, told 2NEWS that the remnants are extremely unsafe.

He says the walls are very unsteady, the roof could collapse at any time and the building contains asbestos.

The district is confident though that neighbors will not be effected by the demolition.

"I think they can feel secure that we're taking every measure we can to prevent any incident from happening," LaBass said. "That's why we want to get it down as soon as possible."

The entire demolition and cleanup is expected to last up to 45 days.

TPS does not have a plan on what to do with the property.

At the time of the fire, Tulsa School of Arts and Sciences called the Barnard property home.  The campus has since picked up and moved to the former Sequoyah Elementary.
