Claremore soldier Jon Townsend laid to rest Friday

CLAREMORE, Okla. - Flags at state buildings were lowered to half-staff Friday in honor of Army Pvt. Jon Townsend, who died nearly two weeks ago during an ambush in Afghanistan.

The 19-year-old Claremore soldier was remembered at his funeral in Claremore Friday.

Townsend's remains were returned to his family Thursday, followed by a procession through his hometown.

Residents lined the streets to honor him and his family.

"I think it shows the family that his loss wasn't in vain, that we all appreciate his sacrifice, what his family has given up for our own freedom," said Debbie Thompson, Claremore resident.

Townsend had recently married his high school sweetheart.  He was due to return from Afghanistan in just a month and a  half.
