Burn bans in effect in several counties

TULSA - Several Oklahoma counties have issued burn bans which last up to a month, including a number of counties in the 2NEWS viewing area.

The latest ban was issued by Okmulgee County, effective March 14.

By Oklahoma law, burn bans can be issued either by counties, or by the governor. All of the burn bans currently in effect were issued by counties.

Currently, 34 of the state's 77 counties have burn bans.

Generally, burn bans prohibit open burning, such as campfires and bonfires. The guidelines also proscribe welding or grilling within a certain distance from flammable vegetation.

Violations of the ban can be costly; in Okmulgee County, a violator faces a fine of up to $500 and a year in jail, or both.
