TULSA (AP) -- The Tulsa suburbs of Bixby and Broken Arrow have earned Tree City USA status from the Arbor Day Foundation for the town's commitment to tree care and maintenance.
Representatives from the towns recently accepted the honor from the Arbor Day Foundation.
The towns are among 21 cities, two Air Force bases and five public utilities that have been designated as a Tree City USA community or Tree Line USA utility in Oklahoma for 2014.
Seven college campuses have also attained Tree Campus USA status.
To earn the special status, a city must create a tree board and spend at least $2 per capita annually on a community forestry program, among other requirements.
