Boat driver suspected of leaving scene of fatal July 4 Lake Eufaula crash turns self in

MCINTOSH COUNTY, Okla. - The driver of a boat responsible for a fatal Fourth of July collision on Lake Eufaula has turned himself in, the Oklahoma Department of Public Safety confirmed Monday.

Ryan Shumway, 30, was manning the wheel of a 20-foot ski boat on Independence Day when it crashed into the bow of an anchored pontoon at roughly 30 mph, which then went airborne onto another anchored boat, authorities say.

Gary McIninch, 55, was then thrown from the pontoon, whose body was found two days later.

Another two people on the pontoon, both children, were injured and Life-Flighted to a nearby hospital.

Investigators say an uninjured Shumway drove his boat away from the scene during the initial search.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation and the no charges have been filed.
