Bixby Optimist Club puts on Green Corn Festival through June 29; proceeds will benefit local schools

BIXBY, Okla. -- This weekend, the dollars patrons spend at the Green Corn Festival will go a lot further than the simply buying a piece of corn or a raffle ticket. Funds raised throughout the three-day event will go to further local education.

Don Crall, member of the Bixby Optimist Club, says this is the 38th year the festival has been held.

"It used to be a festival for workers after the harvest. They would load the corn on the rail cars and once it had all been shipped off, they would celebrate."

Today, the festival is for the community to enjoy and also benefit from. Hosted by the Bixby Optimist Club, the annual event's proceeds will go to scholarships and education opportunities for the Bixby and Liberty schools.

Crall said the club will see an average of about $20,000 net profit.

Each year the Optimist Club distributes about $12,000 in scholarship to area students.

"We target specific kids striving to be better, who may be struggling. So this money doesn't necessarily go the student who scores a 36 on their ACT, but rather the one who is going to Tulsa Community College."

The Optimist Club also puts on the annual Miss Bixby pageant and contributes to programs within Bixby Public Schools like GradFest, ROTC and the Pride of Bixby Marching Band.

Money from the Bingo has been specifically earmarked for Liberty Public Schools to purchase new playground equipment, Crall said.

"Anything we can do that betters a kid's life. Our mission is to make their lives brighter."

The Green Corn Festival continues throughout Friday until 11 p.m. and starts up again at 8:30 a.m. and continues until midnight.
