Broken Arrow Downtown business owners upset about firing

BROKEN ARROW, Okla. - Broken Arrow is searching for someone new to grow downtown after chamber leaders fired the man they recently hired.

Tom Barnett was hired six months ago as B.A.'s Downtown development specialist.

Business owners like Chris Fornell, owner of SewFlakes in Broken Arrow, say Barnett did a fantastic job. She says it was the first time she'd ever had input or been given any answers.

"You had two polar opposite fields and when Tom came he said 'OK, you need to listen over there' and 'you listen over there'. We came to something in the middle that works for everyone. He made that happen."

"There are a lot of really good people out there who will do a really good job," said B.A. Chamber of Commerce Vice President April Sailsbury.

Sailsbury says they aren't including business owners in the search for a new coordinator. It's a private position and right now there is an interim coordinator.

"That person's role is to get to know the business owners and that's exactly what they'll do," she said. "The person who's taking a focus on downtown, until we fill that role, is already gone down talking to the merchants."

Barnett didn't return our calls but friends say he wants his job back. Business owners say they'll keep fighting for Barnett.
