2 Works for You recently partnered with NBC Universal and more than a dozen local animal shelters for the nationwide event Clear the Shelters.

More than 500 animals found their forever homes in Green Country but not everyone who wants to adopt a pet can have one.

Animal Aid of Tulsahas a program that lets you have a “Dog for a Day.”

“Dog for a day program is really neat, it allows people who either want an animal or don’t have the opportunity to have one full time come and take one of the dogs out,” said Portia Gonzalez.

Gonzalez has been volunteering with Animal Aid of Tulsa for several months now and says she enjoys being able to take the dogs out of the shelter.

“I love animals, I love dogs so it’s fun to work with animals and get them to the point where they can be adopted out,’ said Gonzalez.

Gonzalez became involved with the organization after her friend started working with a rescue dog named Creed. Animal Aid rescued the pit bull mix after a car hit him and another dog.

“Creed was trying to crawl back to his little friend who was already dead, it’s just the loyalty in him.’ Said Gonzalez. “He got hit again”

The Dog for a Day program gives these dogs a chance to get out of the kennel and socialize. It also gives people who are thinking about getting a pet the chance to see if they want to take on the responsibility full time.
