American Airlines gives estimates for employees affected

With layoffs looming, American Airlines is offering more insight into job cuts facing the company in 2012.

In a letter detailing airline losses, American cited "the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act [WARN] and/or state law," which requires a company to give proper notice of closings and layoffs to employees and employee representatives.

The possible job cuts would be split over two days. On November 16, 83 people will be affected at American's operations at Tulsa International Airport and at the maintenance base.

A month later, 2,911 people could be affected, making the total nearly 3,000.

The company says those numbers are highly inflated and would be lower if some people take early retirement buyouts.

A document released by the Transport Workers Union earlier this month put the number of estimated job cuts at 993 for the Tulsa maintenance facility.

American Airlines declared bankruptcy last November. The airline originally wanted to cut 13,000 union jobs, including 2,100 from Tulsa.
