1 dead when work truck hits worker in construction zone near Catoosa along Interstate 44

TULSA - A construction worker was killed Friday morning when she was hit by a work truck along Interstate 44 near Catoosa.

The victim, 48-year-old Eri Hernandez, was hit as the dump truck backed up in the work zone near Lynn Lane (South 177th East Avenue).

"She was pulling a rock out of a joint, and next thing we know is we was honking the horn telling her to watch out but it's so loud she couldn't hear us," said Larry Gipson, a long-time friend of the victim.

Hernandez, of Edmond, was employed by Mack's S & S Construction.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol says Hernandez was wearing the proper vest and helmet, but believe her visibility was reduced because she was kneeling down.

With the highway noise and construction equipment, witnesses say Hernandez could not hear the warning,

The driver, 25-year-old Jamie Aguirre, works for Jimbo's Construction.

No charges are expected.

Construction at the site is on hold until Monday.
