TULSA - Excitement is building for residents and business owners in the Kendall-Whittier community.
On Saturday 11 families celebrated the purchase of their new plot of land where their homes will be built.
"This is our plot we're excited we got plot number five, which is my favorite number and it's on on 5th street which is the number five again," new homeowner Marla Tate Reed said. "We're excited this is where our homes gonna be."
Builder Capital Homes expects the first homes near Fifth and South Lewis to be complete by the end of the summer.
The construction is part of a larger project to revitalize the neighborhood.
The $36 million dollar construction project is a partnership between the George Kaiser Family Foundation, the University of Tulsa and private developers. It will include several mix-income residential units, student housing and retail spaces. It's an effort to make the area safer and provide affordable housing.
Long time Brookside business owner Rebecca Joskey is relocating her shop Urban Furnishing to the area. She likes the uniqueness it promises to bring.
"This is an opportunity for indie retailers like us to go down there and spread our wings," she said.
