TULSA - The last surviving Iwo Jima Medal of Honor recipient is being honored this weekend by the Albert E. Schwab Tulsa Marine Corps League.
Hershel "Woody" Williams, from West Virginia, is a guest of honor at this weekend's Medal of Honor Ceremonies.
"We did not go to win the Medal of Honor," Williams said.
Williams, who said he had never heard of Iwo Jima before enlisting in the military and once took out seven enemy bunkers with a flamethrower, said he felt "very humbled and proud" that his fellow marines deemed him worthy of the honor.
"I joined the Marine Corps in 1943 because I felt and understood my freedom was being threatened," Williams said.
Medal of Honor Day is Saturday. Festivities start at 10 a.m.
