1838, Missouri governor Lilburn Boggs issued the Extermination Order, which ordered all Mormons to leave the state or be exterminated.

1901, A getaway car was used for the first time when thieves robbed a shop in Paris.

1904, The first underground New York City Subway opened.

1936, Mrs. Wallis Simpson filed for divorce, which would eventually allow her to marry King Edward VIII and forcing his abdication from the throne.

1951, Winston Churchill became Britain's Prime Minister for the second time at the age of 77.

1954, Benjamin O. Davis, Jr. became the first African-American general in the United States Air Force.

1962, Major Rudolf Anderson of the U.S. Air Force became the only direct human casualty of the Cuban Missile Crisis when his U-2 reconnaissance airplane was shot down in Cuba by a Soviet-supplied SA-2 Guideline surface-to-air missile.

1971, The Republic of the Congo changed its name to the Republic of Zaire.

1978, Egypt's President Anwar Sadat and Israel's Prime Minister Menachem Begin were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their effort in establishing peace between their two countries.

1997, Stock markets around the world crashed because of fears of a global economic meltdown.  The Dow Jones Industrial Average plummeted 554 points, to 7,161.  For the first time, the New York Stock Exchange eventually made the controversial move of closing early for the day.

1998, 77-year-old John Glenn become the oldest astronaut in the world when he blasted off from NASA's launch site in Florida in space shuttle Discovery, on its nine day flight to study the sun.

2002, Luiz Inacio Lula Da Silva was elected president of Brazil in a runoff, becoming the country's first elected leftist leader.
