1607, Guy Fawkes Night has been celebrated in Britain to mark the discovery in 1605 of the Gunpowder Plot to blow up the Houses of Parliament when Guy Fawkes was arrested. Celebrations include setting off of fireworks and tossing an effigy of Guy Fawkes onto a bonfire.

1854, The combined British and French armies defeated the Russians at the Battle of Inkerman during the Crimean War.

1895, George B. Selden is granted the first U.S. patent for the automobile.

1912, The British Board of Film Censors was appointed. They decided on only two classifications: Universal and Not Suitable for Children.

1919, The world's greatest screen lover, American actor Rudolph Valentino, married actress Jean Acker. He was locked out on his wedding night and the marriage lasted less than six hours.

1922, British archeologist Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamun's tomb in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, Egypt.

1940, Franklin D. Roosevelt won a record third term as President (and later a fourth, but he died before completing that).

1960, Mack Sennett, creator of Hollywood's immortal Keystone Cops, died.

1965, British rockers The Who released their single My Generation.

1968, Richard M. Nixon was elected President of the U.S.

1971, British royal Princess Anne was voted Sportswoman of the Year by the British Sportswriters Association.

1979, American cartoonist Al Capp, died.

1989, Russian-born pianist Vladimir Horowitz died.

1998, The death toll from Hurricane Mitch which swept through the western Caribbean, reached 20,000.

2000, Emperor Haile Selassie I is given an Imperial funeral by the Ethiopian Orthodox church.

2006, Saddam Hussein is sentenced to death for his part in the role of the 1982 massacre of 148 Shi'as.
