A group of cats with a unique past is being prepared for adoption.
Up until now, the animals were among the few residents still living in Picher.
That town officially closed in September.
Some of the remaining residents of the town noticed nearly 30 abandoned cats have been walking the empty streets.
They had been living in some abandoned buildings that are scheduled for demolition.
So far, nine have been caught and brought to the Humane Society of Tulsa.
"Basically, they'll get worked up for a physical exam first thing and be combo tested to make sure they're not carrying any diseases that are potentially fatal or contagious to the other cats here," Jamie Soderstorm with the Humane Society said.
After their exams the animals be spayed and neutered, socialized and put up for adoption.
Traps will be set to capture and help the remaining cats.
