Sale is a four-letter word everyone seems to love.
There’s no denying we all love a great deal, but sometimes those sale racks are pretty picked over by the time you get there.
But what if there was a way to know what days stores traditionally mark down items so you could line up for first dibs?
It’s valuable information to a wardrobe stylist and professional shopper like Tamy Lugo. “Being able to get as much as you can for your buck is really exciting,” Lugo said.

That's where coupon king and bargain blogger Kyle James comes in.
With the help of employees from a dozen retailers like Macys, Target and Babies “R” Us, James says he knows every store has a set day of the week when it puts things on sale. He agreed to let us in on the secret.
“If you like to shop the clearance section, it gives you a heads up on when it will be newly stocked with markdowns or the clearance stuff and kind of gives you a step ahead of other shoppers,” says James who runs Rather-Be-Shopping.com.
James says Mondays are the best days for CVS.
If you love Gap, he says go every second Monday.
For Macy’s fans, James says Tuesday is your day. “Usually by Monday close, they're done with all their markdowns and everything has been freshly added to the clearance section, so it makes Tuesdays a great day to shop at Macy’s,” says James.
He says Wednesday tends to be the best day for a great deal at Old Navy.
And for parents, Thursdays are great for Babies “R” Us.
Combine this knowledge with a coupon, and James says you can get what you want at the price you want. Here is James’ advice on markdowns , and a sample of what he blogged:
I had a super friendly sales associate tell me all about the markdown schedule at Kohl’s. She told me that while they are constantly marking stuff down, and putting stuff on sale, the best days to shop occur twice a month. They are the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month. She said those 2 days are typically when they mark the most stuff down and mark it down for the biggest saving (percentage-wise). Shop with a Kohl’s coupon in hand and make out like a bandit. News you can use right there!
Target has one of the most widely known markdown schedules around so I went to a great source for All Things Target and got the scoop on exactly when they mark things down. Also, be sure to crack the price tag code on Target clearance stickers so you can score the best savings. Here is when they do their markdowns:
■ Monday – Electronics, Accessories, Kids Clothing, Books, Baby and Stationery
■ Tuesday — Domestics, Women’s Clothing, Pets and Market (food items)
■ Wednesday — Men’s Clothing, Health and Beauty, Diapers, Lawn & Garden items and Furniture
■ Thursday — Housewares, Lingerie, Shoes, Toys, Sporting Goods, Decor & Luggage
■ Friday — Auto, Cosmetics, Hardware, & Jewelry
