Your arches are the natural curve of the foot that enable your foot to flex normally when you walk. If they're not high enough, you're said to have flat feet. An even more serious condition is an arch that is too high. It generally develops during infancy and should be treated at an early age. There are many possible causes for this condition, including heredity, nerve problems, muscle disease or cerebral palsy. For this reason, a foot specialist should make a careful examination to see if the high arch has its cause in a more serious condition. Physical therapy is often effective in stretching the heel cord and restoring a more natural arch. If surgery is necessary, it should be done during childhood or the teenage years, when the body can more readily adapt to the reformed arch. For more information on this subject, contact a foot specialist in your area.
