Retirement communities differ on their policy regarding pets. Independent living communities usually allow pets because each resident lives in a single-family housing unit. These houses have yards, making it easier to keep a pet. However, many of the assisted living communities or nursing homes have many residents living in one building and must keep the interests of many people in mind. Outside space is limited, so taking care of a pet is not as practical. Nursing homes and hospice facilities administer medical treatment, and health and safety codes restrict pets in such environments. If you're considering a retirement community and have a pet preference, talk to several establishments in your area to see what their policies are regarding pets.
