Facts on hunger in Oklahoma
Sadly, Oklahoma ranks fourth in the nation in the number of people who experience hunger. The single fastest growing group of people relying on emergency feeding programs are employed – they are the working poor. One in every five children in Oklahoma lives in poverty and is at risk of going to bed hungry. Emergency food pantries in Eastern Oklahoma are currently experiencing a 40 percent increase in the number of people seeking assistance due to the economy.
Tough choices
Of the households served by the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma:
48% report having to choose between paying for food or paying for utilities.
36% had to choose between paying for food or paying the rent or mortgage.
34% had to choose between paying for food or paying for medicine or medical care.
Where does your donation go?
Founded in 1981, the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma is a nonprofit organization that distributes donated food to 450 Partner Programs in 24 counties in Eastern Oklahoma. These include food pantries, on-site feeding programs, shelters for the homeless and abused women and children, after-school programs, family and children service agencies and senior citizen centers. Every food and financial donation, big or small, helps make our vision of eliminating hunger in Oklahoman a reality.
What we do to help the hungry
The Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma plays a critical role in hunger relief in eastern Oklahoma. CFBEO distributed over 13.5 million pounds of food to our Partner Programs in fiscal year 2010. Through our partner programs we feed 60,000 people each week, the equivalent of 800,000 meals per month. CFBEO provides a weekly backpack full of food to more than 4,700 children at 143 schools who are at risk of going hungry over the weekend and during holidays as part of our Food for Kids Program.
