Jill Scott has big night at Soul Train Awards

Soul star Jill Scott had a night to remember at the Soul Train Awards on Sunday (29Nov15), when she won three of the top prizes, including the first-ever Lady of Soul honor.

The Grammy winner was presented with the inaugural prize which recognized the star for her longstanding presence in the industry and influence on the world of music.

Upon accepting the award, she told the crowd, "The goal was to write something that you could relate to. The goal was to be in your house when you make that new baby, to be there to squash that argument, to incite it if necessary. I didn't want to be sexy for anybody, but I did want to write some sexy stuff for you. Why does it matter what I look like, as long as I tell my story and you relate to it and you laugh with it and you live with it - and that's what you've been doing. I appreciate the respect."

Later in the ceremony, she was named the Best R&B/Soul Female, beating out Janet Jackson, Beyonce, Janelle Monae, and Tamar Braxton.

Other winners announced during the ceremony included Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars (Song of the Year - Uptown Funk), Omarion and Chris Brown (Best Collaboration - Post to Be), Jidenna (Best New Artist), Silento (Best Dance Performance - Watch Me), and Tyrese (Centric Certified Award).

Meanwhile, Kenny 'Babyface' Edmonds was honored with the Legend Award for his numerous achievements throughout his career. Brandy, Fantasia, Bobby Brown, Tevin Campbell, and Boyz II Men performed the singer/songwriter's hits in a medley, while Edmonds accompanied them on the piano.

Stars such as Jazmine Sullivan, Jeremih, Cameo, and the ceremony's host Erykah Badu also took to the stage to perform, but the highlight of the night came from R. Kelly, who closed out the show with a medley of his hits such as Bump N Grind, Ignition (Remix), and Step In The Name of Love.

The awards were handed out during a ceremony at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas in early November (15), and were televised on Sunday.
