TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Tulsa coach Bill Blankenship says he believes the Golden Hurricane's defense just might be the best one in Conference USA.
Heading into his second year in charge, Blankenship said Friday at Tulsa's media day that he "will not hesitate to brag" on his defensive unit that returns a slew of starters up front and in the secondary. That includes safety Dexter McCoil, who has tied the school record with 13 career interceptions.
The Golden Hurricane had their ups and downs last year after switching from a three-man front to a four-man front under new defensive coordinator Brent Guy. All four of Tulsa's regular-season losses were to teams ranked in the top 10. In between, Blankenship's squad put together a seven-game winning streak to contend for the Conference USA title.
