CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -- Rain has forced the postponement of the start of the NCAA baseball tournament at Virginia until Saturday.
The opening game Friday between the Cavaliers and Army was moved up from 4 p.m. to 11 a.m. EDT in hopes of beating the rain in the forecast. But showers began falling before the game was 5 minutes old and continued on and off throughout the day.
Virginia was batting with a runner on and no outs in the first inning.
The decision to call off all play for the day was made just after 5 p.m.
The opening two games will now be played Saturday, with Oklahoma and Appalachian State in the second game. Three games will be played Sunday, leaving just two teams for a one- or two-game championship showdown Monday.
