Legality of sports betting argued in New Jersey courtroom

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) -- The rights of states versus the federal government are being argued in a New Jersey courtroom in the battle over the state's efforts to allow legalized sports betting.
Attorneys for the state say a 1992 federal law banning legal betting in all but four states is discriminatory and tramples on the authority of state legislatures.
The four major pro sports leagues, the NFL, NBA, NHL and Major League Baseball, and the NCAA sued last year after Gov. Chris Christie signed a sports wagering law and announced his intentions of awarding gambling licenses this year.
The law would allow sports wagering at Atlantic City casinos and the state's horse racing tracks.
A judge is expected to rule in the next few months.
