JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) -- A former assistant coach at Tulsa and Rice is the latest addition to Arkansas State football coach Gus Malzahn's staff.

Malzahn announced Monday that Dean Jackson was hired as an assistant coach.

Jackson spent the past three seasons as the assistant head coach and defensive line coach at Naaman Forest High School in Garland, Texas. Before then, he spent three seasons at Tulsa, where he served as tight ends coach, director of high school relations and an administrative assistant. He and Malzahn worked together while Malzahn was offensive coordinator for the Golden Hurricane.

Jackson went to Tulsa after coaching the tight ends for one season at Rice in 2006, when the Owls played in the New Orleans Bowl.

He also has coached at several other high schools in Texas.
