University of Tulsa golfers and track and field athletes earn academic honors

TULSA - Two Tulsa golfers have been named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, and the men's and women's track and field teams were named Division I All-Academic Track teams for the 2011-2012 season.

The Golf Coaches Association of America announced Monday that Chris Worrell and Mark Mumford had received the honor.

Worrell has maintained a 3.87 grade point average in finance and earlier this year was named to the Conference USA All-Academic Team. Mumford has a 3.24 GPA also in finance.

Worrell placed among the top-15 in three tournaments in the 2011-2012 season, including a season-best ninth place at the Northern Intercollegiate.

Mumford finished the season with a 74.5 stroke average, while finishing among the top-30 five times.

Among other things, to be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically and compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level.

As for the track teams, the Tulsa men's team had the third-best cumulative grade point average in the nation for a track and field team with a team GPA of 3.45.

Duke and Stanford were the only schools with a better grade point average than the Golden Hurricane.

The Tulsa women's team was one of 171 institutions that earned the honor as a result of a cumulative 3.20 grade point average or better. The women's team finished with an overall team GPA of 3.43.
