TULSA - Tulane safety Devon Walker suffered a broken neck and collapsed lung during a football game at H.A. Chapman Stadium in Tulsa on Saturday, a Tulane team doctor told reporters Saturday.
Devon Walker was injured during the final play of the first half against the University of Tulsa and was given CPR. He was later taken off the field.
"[He's] currently in traction, he did sustain a surgical spine fracture," Dr. Felix Savoie III said. "He's got a lot of edema in his neck, he's currently in traction, he's being treated for that edema and the plan currently is for him to have surgery in the next day or two. He's got a great spine surgeon, nurse surgeons involved. That's kinda all we know at this point."
Medical responders say Walker stopped responding at one point after medical officials removed his pads.
Walker is a senior majoring in cell and molecular biology.
Walker is at St. Francis Hospital.
