PAULS VALLEY, Okla. (AP) -- The Oklahoma Highway Patrol says a Pauls Valley man was critically injured when he was hit by a train after apparently lying on the railroad tracks in front of the oncoming locomotive.

Troopers say 21-year-old William Scott Jr. was struck by a Burlington Northern-Santa Fe train about 12:40 a.m. Saturday just north of Pauls Valley.

Troopers say Scott ran to the tracks and laid on them as the train approached. No reason for his action was given.

Scott was taken to an Oklahoma City hospital in critical condition. A hospital spokesman did not immediately return a phone call for an updated condition.
