BLACKWELL, Okla. - Some residents in Kay County could soon receive checks in the mail from the settlement of a class action lawsuit against the owner of a former smelter operation.

Residents of Blackwell previously sued Freeport-McMoRan Cooper and Gold Inc., claiming the smelter operations had contaminated groundwater and soil in the area.

Last month, some residents had been notified a settlement was reached.  If the $119 million agreement is approved, some 4,000 property owners in Blackwell could begin receiving checks that range from $500 to $7,000.
