Insurance Commissioner targets uninsured drivers

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Motorists caught driving without insurance could have their license plate confiscated under legislation being pushed by Oklahoma's Insurance Commissioner.

Commissioner John Doak is promoting separate bills that would allow law enforcement officers to remove an uninsured motorist's tag and replace it with a temporary sticker. The plan also includes an administrative fee that provides temporary insurance coverage for the stickered vehicles.

Doak says he also wants to increase the fines for driving without insurance. He says uninsured drivers not only raise insurance rates for all motorists, but if an uninsured driver is involved in an accident, "the costs could cripple you financially."

An analysis by the Oklahoma Insurance Department estimates that more than 560,000 vehicles in Oklahoma are uninsured.
