Brig guard: Depression history put Manning at risk

FORT MEADE, Md. (AP) -- A former Marine Corps brig supervisor says a history of depression increased the suicide risk of an Army private charged with sending classified documents to WikiLeaks.
Marine Corps Master Sgt. Brian Papakie (pah-PAH'-kee) testified Wednesday at a pretrial hearing for Pfc. Bradley Manning at Fort Meade.
Manning claims his nine months in pretrial confinement in Quantico, Va., amounted to illegal punishment, warranting dismissal of his case.
The defense claims that there was no justification for keeping Manning in his cell 23 hours a day, sometimes with no clothes.
The government claims the restrictions were to keep the 24-year-old intelligence analyst from hurting or killing himself.
Manning is accused of giving the online publication of hundreds of thousands of Iraq and Afghanistan war records and diplomatic cables.
