OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) -- Animal lovers from across Oklahoma are visiting with their legislators and urging them to oppose a measure that would pave the way for a horse slaughtering facility in Oklahoma.

Officials with several animal rights groups sponsored Humane Lobby Day on Thursday and briefed about 50 participants on how to lobby their elected officials.

The House and Senate each have overwhelmingly passed bills designed to end Oklahoma's 50-year ban on horse slaughtering. Supporters say the measures would help alleviate an increase in the number of abandoned horses and prevent the animals from being shipped to Mexico.

The Humane Society's Oklahoma State Director Cynthia Armstrong says visiting with local legislators can often help change their position on a bill.
