SHAWNEE, Okla. (AP) -- Two fired Oklahoma Department of Human Services workers have pleaded no contest to suppressing evidence that could have prevented a 5-year-old girl from being returned to her father -- who later killed her.
Randy Joe Lack of Tecumseh and Jennifer Shawn of Shawnee were each sentenced to one year probation Friday in Pottawatomie County District Court. They were charged with withholding evidence from a judge when they recommended Serenity Deal be placed with her father -- Sean Brooks.
The evidence includes a hospital photo of the girl with two black eyes and her face swollen after a visit with Brooks.
The girl died in June 2011 -- less than a month after being returned to Brooks. Brooks is serving a life sentence after pleading guilty to killing the girl.
