MCALESTER, Okla. - McALESTER, Okla. (AP) -- A McAlester police officer is charged with assault for allegedly using a Taser on a handcuffed woman after she spit on him.
Officer Sterling Taylor-Santino was charged Friday in Pittsburg County District Court with one count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.
The Oklahoman reports that Taylor-Santino has been assigned to desk duty until the case is resolved.
An affidavit filed by an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agent alleges Taylor-Santino used his Taser on Nikina Williams after she spit on him at the Pittsburg County Jail on June 24.
Taylor-Santino pleaded not guilty during a Friday court appearance and was released on his own recognizance.
Police Chief Jim Lyles says Taylor-Santino has been disciplined internally with an unpaid suspension, but he didn't say how long.
