TULSA - According to the American Red Cross all residents have been allowed back into their homes after some residents were asked to evacuate their homes Wednesday afternoon due to a chemical spill on Turner Turnpike.

Around 8 p.m., all eastbound and westbound lanes were opened on the Turner Turnpike after being closed for over 5 hours.

The boundaries of the evacuation area included Okmulgee Ave. to the south, Hwy. 97 to the east, Andrew Street to the north and Sapulpa city limits to the west.

Ridgeway Baptist Church in Sapulpa opened for those displaced by the spill.

Officials were worried about toxic fumes associated with the spill.  Authorities said those fumes can be potentially deadly.

Authorities say an 18-wheeler carrying 4,500 gallons of hydrochloric acid started leaking while traveling westbound on the turnpike.
