TURLEY, Okla. - The Turley Fire Department held a bake sale and lunch Saturday to raise money after fire response costs have piled up this year.
Firefighters say they been facing financial struggles after a busy fire season along with one of the largest wildfires the department has ever seen.
They say rural volunteer departments rely heavily on community support.
"These are very important,” said Chief Keith Ross. “They connect us to the community. They get to know us and we get to know them.”
Ross says they have a tight budget and recently had to pay over $1,400 to repair their main fire engine’s water pump.
