TULSA - The Tulsa Metro Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday urged Dollar Thrifty shareholders to vote against a proposed merger with rental car company Hertz.
Hertz has offered to buy the Tulsa-based Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group for $1.27 billion.
Dollar Thrifty currently employs about 700 people in Tulsa. City leaders are concerned the merger with Hertz will mean jobs transferred out of the area or eliminated.
"No information from Hertz leads us to believe that they have a desire to maintain much, if any presence, and certainly not to grow presence in this community," Chamber CEO Mike Neal said at a press conference.
Avis has also offered to buy Dollar Thrifty. The Chamber believes that would be a better choice, because Avis already has several hundred employees in Tulsa.
The shareholder vote is scheduled for Thursday, September 16th. Representatives from Dollar Thrifty declined to comment.
