TULSA - Testimony began Monday in the trial of a man accused of murdering two people in south Tulsa.
A jury was seated last week to hear the case against Zane Atchison. He's charged with two counts of first-degree murder in what prosecutors say was a murder-for-hire.
Prosecutors say Atchison was hired to kill Patrick Shawn but ended up shooting Kaylyn Kosofsky as well because she was a witness. Both Shawn, 27, and Kosofsky, 24, were found shot in the head at a south Tulsa QuikTrip in August 2011.
Prosecutors alleged Monday that a man by the name of Joel Pina hired Atchison to kill Shawn over a $43,000 drug bill.
Pina is also charged with murder.
Atchison faces the death penalty if convicted, the first such case in Tulsa since 2009.
When the trial began Monday, Atchison's family sat on one side of the courtroom while the victims' families sat on the other.
Fourteen jurors listened as Tulsa police and EMSA paramedics described the scene where they found Shawn and Kosofsky each shot in the head.
One witness testified she was present when Pina hired Atchison to kill Shawn. Shawnee Heath said she helped Atchison locate Shawn, with whom she previously had a relationship.
Heath said on the witness stand she has an agreement with prosecutors in exchange for her testimony.

Atchison is also facing drug charges for allegedly trafficking meth into the jail in May. Authorities say Atchison and another inmate convinced a jail nurse to bring in "ice cream" -- the street name for meth.
