The son of former University of Oklahoma star running back Adrian Peterson has passed away after he was allegedly beaten by his mother's new boyfriend, according to Sioux Falls police.
"This afternoon the police department learned the two year old boy died from injuries sustained during the aggravated assault on Wednesday, October 9th," the South Dakota police department said in a release Friday afternoon.
TMZ reports the suspect, Joseph Robert Patterson, is charged with aggravated felony assault and battery on an infant. The 27-year-old has already made one court appearance and is being held on $750,000 cash bond.
The child was rushed to a hospital Wednesday afternoon after emergency responders found him unresponsive.
TMZ cites law enforcement sources as saying the child suffered severe head injuries.
The reigning NFL MVP was at the team's practice facility Friday. Peterson briefly spoke to reporters but took no questions.
"I really appreciate all the support from fans and the Vikings," said Peterson, according to USA Today. "I ask y'all to respect my privacy."
