MCINTOSH COUNTY, Okla. - Investigators made the first significant move Thursday morning in a year-old homicide case, arresting a man in Okfuskee County on a first-degree murder charge.
Steven Lee Vanzant was taken into custody around 11 a.m. for the death of Deborah Kelso, 57, whose body was found inside her charred Checotah home last August. Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation agents, who assisted a McIntosh County detective in the arrest, allege Vanzant shot Kelso in the head and set her home on fire.
The pair lived together "for many years," according to OSBI officials. Authorities arrested the 53-year-old at a friend's home about four miles northwest of Okemah.
He was booked into the McIntosh County Criminal Justice Center and is being held on $2 million bond.
