Suspect who fired at Tulsa police officers Thursday morning dead after turning gun on himself

TULSA -- The suspect who took aim at several Tulsa police officers Thursday morning is dead.

Police say officers were in the process of confronting him when he turned the gun on himself.

It all started around 5:15 a.m. when a man on foot fired a gun at police near 11th and South Garnett after robbing a nearby doughnut shop.

An officer recognized the man by his description as he walked down the road. While turning her car around, the suspect fired six shots at her.

At some point, the suspect fired on a second officer not far away. Neither officer was injured.

Police converged on the area by car and helicopter, some armed with shotguns, and fired multiple rounds at the suspect around 7 a.m.

The man then shot himself and was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner's office will determine which gunshot killed him.

The suspect's identity has not been released.

Throughout the course of the morning's events, Tulsa police received assistance from an unlikely source.

Around 6:30 a.m., police requested the assistance of the National Weather Service to transmit a civil emergency message via weather radios to warn residents of the situation and caution them against venturing out into the area while the gunman was on the loose.

Bart Haake, with the NWS, said the organization has the ability to transmit alerts for police and civil emergencies along with weather alerts.

Haake said this is the first time an alert has been issued for Tulsa police.
