Police step up school zone enforcement

TULSA - Tulsa police will be out in full force Monday beginning a week-long focus on speed enforcement around schools and bus stops.
Police urge drivers to put away the phones, leave the radio alone and stay alert as students return to school after winter break.
Extra enforcement is put in place each time school is back in session because drivers can become lax in their driving and forget to watch for pedestrians.
Police say they will not issue any warnings. Fines for speeding in a school zone can reach $500 and offenders can even go to jail.
"Warnings don't work. The only thing that does, if it cost them then it tends to make them slow down more," said Tulsa Police Officer Steven Florea.
