OWASSO, Okla. - The Owasso 8th Grade Center was the scene Monday morning as students and faculty discovered one of their own was receiving a major national honor.

Science teacher Sarah Vann was surprised Monday with the 2011 Milken Educator Award.  Vann is one of 40 outstanding educators nationwide to receive the distinct honor.

While she calls herself one of the coolest nerds you'll ever meet, her attitude and passion are why she won the award.

Vann says winning the Milken is "definitely unforgettable. I had absolutely no clue that this was happening today.  zero.  I'm still kind of in shock actually."

After Monday's ceremony, Vann said she needed a breather so she can focus on her next lesson, which is over chemical bonding.

Vann is also one of two finalists in the state of Oklahoma up for the Presidential Award for Math and Sciences.  If she wins this next award, Vann will head to the nation's capitol to meet President Barack Obama at the White House in the spring.

Along with the Milken Educator Award comes a $25,000 check.
