Muskogee teacher arrested for allegedly bringing guns, drugs to campus; accused of hitting student

MUSKOGEE, Okla. - A teacher at Muskogee Public Schools was arrested Wednesday for bringing firearms and drugs to campus and is accused of hitting a student, according to court documents.

The allegations against Paul Washington, a 49-year-old teacher at Alice Robertson Junior High school, stem from an alleged fight Washington had with a student on school grounds. Washington, the documents indicate, hit the teen "with force and violence." 

After the scuffle, campus police say they were alerted to the possibility of Washington having a weapon on school grounds.

An investigation into the matter uncovered two guns, marijuana and a pipe in the teacher's vehicle. 

MPS officials will not comment on Washington's future with the school, calling it a personnel issue. 

Washington, in court Thursday, is charged with possession of a weapon on school property, possession of a controlled substance in presence of a minor, unlawful possession of drug paraphernalia and assault and battery.

As to why Washington isn't being charged with child abuse, Muskogee County District Attorney Larry Moore says the circumstances don't merit the count.

Washington will be back in court March 25. His bond is set at $10,000.
