Muskogee High School students are looking for one last push from the community to get some much needed upgrades to their fine arts stage.
MHS is currently the only Oklahoma high school in the running for a $3,000 Lowe's gift card that would go toward materials for renovating their performance space through the “Smash” Make a Musical Contest.
“ The contest is sponsored by the TV show 'Smash,'” said Penny McGill, all-school musical director at MHS. “A parent submitted our name, and we were among those narrowed down to the semi-finalists for the competition.”
From now until April 10, the community can vote (one voter per day) here . The top five schools with the most votes will be selected as grand prizes winners. As of April 8, MHS had more than 6,100 votes.
Currently, drama and musical students perform in an area McGill says has not be upgraded since it was built in the 1960s.
On the contest website, MHS pleads for votes by saying, “With the latest technology from the 1960s, we struggle to present quality shows. Our facility has drainage issues, outdated lighting equipment and tattered curtains.”
“ In this climate, theater is often the first department where funds are removed,” McGill said. “People don't realize the need to have funds for performances.”
Students and faculty are looking to locals to continue voting and help them address the outdated facilities.
“ Musicals at our school are open to everyone,” McGill said. “We have such a diversity in this group. We have music, singing and acting, of course, but we have the AV department that helps us with sound and our artists that help design the sets. Winning this contest would impact everyone.”
Votes can be cast here (http://www.makeamusical.org/smash-make-a-musical/meet-the-schools/) through April 29.
