TULSA (AP) -- More than 6,000 people have visited a website aimed at drawing attention to the thousands of Tulsa-based American Airlines workers whose jobs and pensions may be in jeopardy in the face of serious job cuts from the struggling air carrier.

Thousands visited www.isupportamericanjobs.com and signed a petition designed to send a message to community leaders and corporate officials that workers must be treated fairly.

American Airlines announced this week that it planned to eliminate 2,100 positions at the Tulsa maintenance base in an effort to cut costs. The Fort Worth-based company plans to eliminate roughly 13,000 positions companywide.

The website was launched Monday by the local chapter of the Transport Workers Union, which represents nearly 6,000 airline workers in Tulsa.
