The City of Miami, Okla. announced Tuesday morning that Mayor Kent Ketcher has passed away.
Ketcher was hospitalized over the weekend after an incident left him in serious condition, officials said.
The City of Miami, Okla. appointed an interim mayor, Mayor Pro Tempore Rudy Schultz, Monday morning.
"This action is necessary due to disability," City Manager Jeffrey Bishop said in a press release Monday.
Bishop declared a vacancy in the mayoral seat this morning.
"The City Council and the staff of the City of Miami extend our most heartfelt thoughts and prayers to the Ketcher family and request that the public provide the utmost respect for the family’s privacy at this time," Bishop continued in the release.
According to the city's charter, an election is required to install a new mayor. Schultz has called a special meeting Aug. 29 to consider calling an election to appoint a new mayor.
Tuesday's regularly scheduled council meeting has been canceled.
