HASKELL, Okla. - Muskogee County deputies arrested a Haskell couple after finding three young children living in a cockroach-infested home.
In addition to child neglect charges, 28-year-old Carl Sowers and his wife, 24-year-old Kimberly Sowers, also face drug charges after investigators found a meth lab.
Deputies and the Oklahoma Department of Human Services began investigating after receiving a tip about children living in poor conditions at the home, located north of Haskell.
Muskogee County Sheriff Charles Pearson describes it as one of the worse cases of child neglect his department has ever seen.
"The home was in real bad condition, was infested with all kinds of different insects and roaches," said Pearson. "The deputy noticed a roach crawled out of the baby's mouth that was in the playpen."
The children are ages 1, 3 and 4, according to investigators.
Deputies said Kimberly Sowers agreed to let them look around.
Investigators said Sowers also showed them several items used to cook and smoke meth.
"In the process they discovered drug paraphernalia and later on throughout the interview they found a partial [meth] lab," said Pearson.
The meth lab was found inside an R.V. located on the property, a few yards away from the trailer, said investigators.
DHS took the three kids into custody and both parents were arrested.
"This is the worst of society," said Pearson. "Unfortunately these are the things that we deal with and the children are who suffer."
Investigators hope more people come forward when they suspect neglect.
"It's imperative that the public tells us this, especially if they know children are involved," said Pearson.
A third person, a woman, was also at the house, but was not arrested.
The investigation remains ongoing.
