TULSA -- Drum Day Tulsa 2013 is happening now in Tulsa at Union High School.
Drum Day originally began nine years ago in efforts to break a world record, but in the process it turned into something much bigger.
“We started the event with a simple idea: we wanted to break the world record for the most drummers playing the same beat at the same time,” Mike DePetrillo, founder of Drum Day Tulsa. “As I am putting the event together, I found out that Oklahoma, Tulsa specifically, has huge food insecurity issues.”
So drummers are charged 10 can goods each, with 100 percent of the food donated going to support the Community Food Bank of Eastern Oklahoma.
“We’ve put right at close to 40,000 pounds of food into the food bank so far,” DePetrillo said.
The goal is to raise 7,000 pounds of food at this year’s event.
There is no cost for spectators, but they are also encouraged to bring non-perishable food donations.
Drummers of all ages and all skill levels are invited to attend. DePetrillo said the youngest drummer at the 2012 event was 3 years old. The oldest was in their 80s.
“We play a real simple beat … Anybody that has a drumset or knows a friend that has one, bring it out.”
Organizers are working to gather more than 582 drummers to play at the same time and break the world record currently held in England by “Drumfest”
The event runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Union High School’s Multipurpose Activity Center.
