Alonzo Johnson found guilty in final trial in Neal Sweeney murder-for-hire case

TULSA - Jurors have found Alonzo Johnson, the final man connected to a high-profile Tulsa murder case, guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder.

Johnson is the fifth man implicated and the third to go to trial in what prosecutors call the murder-for-hire of Tulsa businessman Neal Sweeney.

Sweeney was shot and killed in his office in 2008.

Mohammed Aziz, a former gas station owner that prosecutors say wanted revenge on Sweeney for shutting off the gas at his stations, accepted a plea deal to testify against Johnson and the others.

Prosecutors described Johnson as an "evil man" who was eager to participate in Sweeney's murder for a few thousand dollars. They also said he provided the getaway vehicle.

Shields then recruited his brother, Fred Shields, the gunman, Terrico Bethel, and Johnson, who is a cousin to the Shields brothers.

Allen Shields cut a deal with prosecutors in exchange for his testimony, but he committed suicide in 2011 during a police standoff before any of the trials began.

Fred Shields and Bethel have already been convicted and sentenced to life in prison.

The jury recommended Wednesday that Johnson receive two life sentences and a $10,000 fine. His sentencing is set for Jan. 4.

Aziz is also awaiting sentencing.
